Pursuing fitness goals can be intimidating, especially if you're new to the scene. It's easy to get lost in fad diets and pinterest workouts, and if you're new to the gym it's likely you're doing a few things you shouldn't. To side-step being "that guy" (or girl) at the gym, we've collected a list of things to avoid while you're there.
1. Avoid Spontaneity
Make sure to plan your workouts before you get to the gym. Doing so will ensure you get the greatest results for your time spent pumping iron. By planning your workouts (up to a week in advance) you'll be sure to exercise muscle groups that otherwise might go forgotten. Write down what it is you'd like to accomplish, and don't settle for less when you make it to the gym.
2. Avoid Heavy Weights
For now. Avoid heavy weights until you're ready for them. You won't impress anyone if you try to lift more than your capable of and, ultimately, get stuck in your squat. Push yourself, but do so in an incremental fashion and never alone. Make sure to have someone spot you when you're lifting in case you struggle to finish a rep. It's safer, and less embarrassing than going at it alone.
3. Avoid Comparison
You are your biggest competitor, not the meat-head two machines down. Avoid comparison with others and focus on yourself. Make goals, and monitor your personal progress. Doing so will keep you motivated to live a healthy lifestyle. Plus, nobody likes getting gawked at at the gym.
4. Avoid Dehydration
Dehydration inhibits your body's ability to perform - no matter the exercise. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout. When we say "before," we mean hours before your workout. Simply guzzling 20 ounces of water when you arrive to the gym does not give your body enough time to hydrate. Make sure you're getting at least eight 8-ounce glasses (2-3 large BlenderBottles) of water a day, and you should be in a good spot.
